Digital Eye Strain

Did you know that according to a survey carried out by The Vision Council in 2015, 65% of adult Americans are suffering from digital eye strain symptoms? You could be one of them!

Also known as computer vision syndrome, digital eye strain is a group of vision- and eye-related problems resulting from prolonged device and computer use. Typically, the level of discomfort felt grows as the amount of digital exposure increases.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

The most common symptoms associated with digital eye strain include:

  • Dry eyes

  • Blurred vision

  • Eye strain

  • Headaches

  • Neck and shoulder pain

Different situations can give rise to these symptoms but they are usually caused by glare from a digital screen, poor lighting, poor seating posture, improper viewing distances, untreated vision problems, or a combination of these.

Addressing Digital Eye Strain

Many people experience visual symptoms of digital eye strain temporarily, finding relief after stopping device use or computer work, but there are others who go through continued reduced visual ability. To help bring about relief, the American Optometric Association suggests following the 20-20-20 rule: taking a 20-second break to look at something located 20 feet away every 20 minutes.

But what if this doesn’t offer relief from digital eye strain? Don’t fret! Just call on us at Chan Eye Care and we’ll be more than glad to help you deal with your computer-induced situation.

After a comprehensive eye exam, our eye doctors may prescribe eyeglasses during computer use to ease eye strain or correct prescriptions for those already wearing eyeglasses so they can enjoy optimal visual clarity. If necessary, vision therapy may also be employed to address digital eye strain effectively.
