Chan Eye Care, PLLC: Personalized Macular Degeneration Treatment
Did you know that 2010 saw about 2.07 million Americans diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration? With the U.S. population aging, this figure is expected to rise to 5.44 million by 2050.
The leading cause of vision loss in older Americans, age-related macular degeneration, or simply macular degeneration, is an eye condition characterized by deterioration in the macula, a small central area in the retina responsible for visual acuity or the ability to perform tasks requiring seeing fine details.
There are two types of age-related macular degeneration: dry and wet. Dry macular degeneration affects 8 out of every 10 people with the condition and is characterized by macular thinning as a person ages and the growth of tiny protein clumps called drusen. Wet macular degeneration, on the other hand, is less common but more serious, occurring when blood vessels grow under the retina and leak blood or other fluids that lead to macular scarring.
Who is at Risk of Macular Degeneration?
Aside from older adults, macular degeneration occurs most in whites and females. It runs in the family as well and may be a side effect of certain medication. Other risk factors for the condition include: smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, and lighter eye color.
